Fraunhofer is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. Our employees conduct research at more than 70 institutes and research institutions in the fields of health, security, communications, mobility, production, energy and the environment.
At Image Processing Department at Fraunhofer ITWM we are developing individual image processing solutions for problems in production, medical technology and material science based on innovative mathematical models and algorithms in close cooperation with industrial customers and research institutes.
Opportunities for your career with Fraunhofer are just as varied as our research fields: whether in training, as a student assistant, as an intern, for your thesis or PhD, as a scientist or in administration – become part of the team!
Virtual Image Processing is a research project aiming to utilize the power of multidisciplinarity by uniting Computer Vision, Computer Graphics, Machine Learning and Robotics. End goal is to offer a modular open source framework allowing easier development and implementation of faster and more robust solutions when it comes to automatic image analysis.

Currently we have two internship positions available:
- Implementation and Extension of Geometric Modelling Algorithms,
- Software Engineering for CAD-Based Surface Inspection.
Implementation and Extension of Geometric Modelling Algorithms
We are developing new approaches for smooth B-spline surface approximation. Initial surface of a mesh is partitioned into a collection of quadrilateral cells, which are further approximated with B-spline surfaces.
- Pipeline is already fully implemented,
- Individual steps use different algorithms, many of which have known possibilities of enhancement.
Students can choose to work on one or more of the following tasks:
- Geometric feature segmentation,
- Improvement of quad mesh generation/optimization,
- Implementation of state of the art algorithms,
- Research on better solutions for individual steps.
Prerequisites:
- Good programming skills (preferably C++),
- Solid knowledge of geometry.
Software Engineering for CAD-Based Surface Inspection
We are developing a framework capable of revolutionizing the way objects are inspected. It is a modular pipeline consisting of different algorithms with the goal of automatizing visual inspection system design.
- Developed tools are mostly standalone,
- Tool use can be enhanced in terms of intuitivity.
Students can choose to work on one or more of the following tasks:
- Development of tools for exploratory parameter studies,
- GUI development for inspection planning purposes,
- Result visualization,
- Data structure enhancement,
- Compatibility enhancement between different tools and planning steps.
Prerequisites:
- C++,
- JavaScript (AngularJS + NodeJS),
- Python.
