Last year we launched the “Career Management” course for the first time to help students choose a career, write a CV, set career goals and much more. Applications are still open – apply by 4 October!
Wondering what it was like for the first generation of students before you decide?
Šimun Šprem, last year’s student, shared his experience with us. In this interview with Šimun, you’ll find out what the best part of the course was and why you should sign up for it!
What was your motivation to sign up for the “Career Management” course?
My motivation for the course was to learn how to prepare for my first job: searching for a job that I think is ideal for me, writing a CV and cover letter, preparing for job interviews, preparing for the first day and finally how to interact with other employees in the workplace.
How did the course help you to advance your career?
Before I signed up for the course, I’d no idea of my ideal job, and I especially didn’t know where to find it. I didn’t find out what that job was during the course, but it definitely steered me towards it, not only because my views on the profession changed for the better, but also because I learned how to increase my chances of getting the job (how to write a better CV, how to behave at the interview…).
What did the course help you with the most?
Before I attended the course, writing a CV was a mystery to me because I didn’t know how to write it in such a way that it would fit on one page and at the same time contain as much important information as possible. The course taught me what belongs in a CV and what doesn’t, and now I think I know how to write it well.
Have you continued to apply the knowledge and techniques you learned? If so, which ones?
I use LinkedIn a lot (which I didn’t even have before taking the course), which helps me find job ads and relevant articles more easily. Also, before the course I wasn’t good at planning and organising, but through the course I’ve learned how to limit the time I spend on my daily activities and thus increase my productivity.
What did you like best about the course?
What I liked most about the course was the accessibility of the course instructors and the effort they put into the course. For each lecture, they’d prepared colourful materials for us which helped us master the topics.
What do you remember most about the course?
It’s hard for me to say what I remembered most from the course; I remembered a bit of everything and created a picture in my mind of the whole process of job search, workplace behaviour and time management.
Would you recommend the course to others? Why?
I would recommend the course to other colleagues who’re looking for a job to prepare themselves as much as possible for certain stages of the recruitment process (applying for a job ad, interviewing, hiring). I’d also recommend the course to employed colleagues to help them focus on the ideal job.
