Another student from the course “Career Management” shared her experience about what it was like last year and what we’ve learned. Registrations are still open and if you want to know if last year’s students were satisfied with the course, read the interview with Magdalena Cvetko and find out why you need this course.
What was your motivation to sign up for the course “Career Management”?
Before I enrolled in the course, I’d no plans for my career. I was interested in many different fields but couldn’t see myself in any of them. This made it difficult for me to make study-related decisions, such as choosing a major and electives. Then came the course “Career Management”! When I read the course description, the most interesting topics for me were understanding my own career profile and determining the perfect employer and job – I saw it as the solution to my problem.
How did the course help you develop your career?
As I said, the first topics helped me to envision my perfect workplace. Identifying the perfect work environment enabled me to narrow down my choice of the perfect workplace. I also realised that it’s not crucial to have a specific job to prepare for – having more of them gives me a broader view, and I can always decide to change jobs, and that’s not a bad thing.
Also, setting short-term career goals has helped me a lot. I’m generally a person who likes to plan everything in life in advance, but sometimes that hinders my development. Short-term goals are therefore great! The likelihood of me wanting to change something is very low, and if the goals are set correctly, they give me the direction I need to move in for a few years.
What did the course help you with the most?
The course reduced the stress I had because of the uncertainty about my career. There were other students in the course who were in a similar situation to mine and many of them managed to solve this problem and their advice helped me a lot.
The course also goes through the whole process of finding a job – choosing a job, looking for job ads and networking, writing an application, attending an interview and finally how to behave properly in a work environment. The lecturers were very approachable and gave us a lot of general advice for the whole process, while they also had time for individual problems of the participants.
Have you continued to apply the knowledge and techniques you learned? If so, which ones?
As I was applying for student internships and several jobs, I benefited greatly from techniques for writing a good CV and cover letter, such as the STAR technique. The applications also included an oral part, an interview. In the course we learned how to make a good impression on employers and examiners, and I successfully applied what I learned.
The issue of communication in the workplace was also important to me. When a job involves meetings or negotiations with clients, good communication and the ability to resolve potential conflicts is very important. Apart from the business world, I also apply some tips in my personal life, and they’ve helped me a lot.
What did you like best about the course?
There’s an intimate, friendly atmosphere in the course because the number of participants is limited, and the lecturers are nice and approachable. The participants could open up without shame and talk about their problems and experiences. Often the older students also gave advice to the younger ones because they’d more experience with different business situations. The lecturers encouraged the whole group to participate but didn’t force anyone to talk about anything they might feel uncomfortable about. We often had time-limited group tasks that forced us to practise team spirit and plan tasks.
What do you remember most from the course?
I’ve good memories of the whole experience. The lectures were fun, interactive and very educational, the students were nice and friendly and the lecturers were great. It’s really hard for me to say what I remember most! Even the unfortunate scheduling of lectures on Monday evenings didn’t dampen the impression.
Would you recommend the course to others? Why?
I would definitely recommend the course to anyone – whether you know or don’t know what you want to do, whether you just want to improve your presentation in the business world, whether you need advice on job hunting or applying for jobs… The course addresses everything and everyone is sure to benefit from signing up. Even if you already know all this, you’ll still enjoy the course, you’ll meet new people, and you can use your knowledge and experience to help other students.
